Best Activities on Kauai

Updated: Dec 12, 2023

While it's known as the Garden Isle, Kauai could also be called the Adventure Isle. The adventures are endless and unique. From surfing at the Hanalei Pier to the epic Hanakapiai Falls hike along the Napali coast, Kauai will keep you busy with adventure whether your trip is one week or one month.

BEACHES

With so many stunning Kauai beaches, it's hard to know where to begin! Check out our favorite North Shore Kauai Beaches, complete with parking info and best seasons to visit.

Ha'ena State Park

Ha'ena State Park deserves a special highlight: Ha'ena State Park is the entry point for the icon Hanakapai Falls hike and Napali Coast trail. More on our favorite hikes here. You can also enjoy the beach park which includes a swimming cove and some of the best snorkeling on the North Shore.

Ha'ena State Park is located at "the end of the road" on the North Shore, about 4 miles outside of Hanalei and 2 miles past Hale Pulelehu'a. You now need reservations to enter the park, which also allows you access to the Hanakapi'ai Falls hike along the Napali Coast.

There are options for shuttle and entry, park and entry and walk-in. You can view and purchase tickets here. Make sure to check availability and plan ahead for tickets as tickets sell out especially during peak travel times.

HIKING

Kauai is home to amazing hikes in addition to the ocean adventures. AllTrails is our favorite website for discovering new trails, trail information, difficulty and more. Visit their website here. We also created an entire blog post with our favorite Kauai hikes here.

ISLAND GARDENS

The garden isle is full of luscious, tropical gardens to explore. There are self-guided and guided tour options on both the North and South Shore at a number of beautiful gardens. Explore our recommended list of Kauai gardens here.

ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES

Kayak Hanalei

Enjoy a kayak up the Hanalei river via kayak or SUP. Enjoy access to easy rentals from Kayak Hanalei right on the edge of downtown Hanalei. Check out hours and prices on their website here.

Anaina Hou - Kilauea

Located on 30 acres in Kilauea, Anaina Hou Community Park offers entertainment, recreation, and educational programs and services for visitors. The campus features the Porter Pavilion events complex available for rent, unique Mini Golf & Gardens, a 17,000 sq. ft. playground, weekly Farmers’ Markets, access to the Wai Koa Loop Trail, and more. Click here to visit their website.

Kilauea Lighthouse

The Kilauea Lighthouse and Wildlife Refuge is a great half day trip if you're looking for an adventure outside of Hanalei and Haena. A 20-minute drive from Hale Pulelehu'a, explore the lighthouse and finish the trip with lunch or dinner at the Kilauea Bakery (a local favorite). Click here for the Kilauea Lighthouse website.
